On August 22, 2025, breakout artist Sombr (Shane Micheal Boose) released his newest album, I Barely Know Her. The album combines elements of pop/ indie rock (with layered harmonies and experimental instrumentation). The discography covers universal themes of heartbreak, longing, and emotional turmoil. Sombr was born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with a family heavily influenced by musical backgrounds, such as his father raising him on classic rock (a right of passage to many). Sombr credits his upbringing and childhood environment to shaping him both “sonically and lyrically,” he took these inspirations and began releasing music in October 2021. While his first song “Nothing Left To Say” didn’t exactly blow up overnight, just a few years later songs “Back to Friends” and “Undressed” found overnight fame on TikTok. Making the I Barely Know Her album a bonafide success.
Sombr’s primary audience (Gen Z teenagers; specifically adolescent girls) have deeply resonated with the albums themes of heartbreak and longing, which played a fundamental role in the releases boom. He particularly discusses events most teenagers can find tragically relatable. Song “12 to 12”, expresses that the narrator, even in a crowded room, is stuck looking for their ex, unsure if any fleeting feelings remain. “Back to Friends”, illuminates the awkward aftermath of romantic loss, the pain of shifting back to casual acquaintances after being so much more. “Undressed” (his most famous song, even winning him an MTV VMA), describes a fear of moving on, being reluctant to open up with someone new after being so deeply hurt.
While the album has been well received by its target audience, some critics and listeners have made notes. Many felt the songs relied heavily on a mundane musical formula and the tracks lack a sense of variety. Long time listeners have also noted that the more polished/professionally produced style feels like a huge jump from his earlier simple sound, which they preferred. Reviews have stated that the songs come across as filler-like, compared to his singles. Despite it all, support for the album has completely beat out criticism. Listeners have praised the relatability, production and diversity even with a common theme of heartbreak. The songwriting is personal and emotionally direct and the production is significantly more ambitious than in his past.
Overall, the release’s reaction has been beyond influential and largely positive. With personal ratings of a 7/10 for lyricism, a 6/10 for themes, and a 6/10 for production, I rate Sombrs I Barely Know Her album a 6/10.
