A new opportunity has arrived on campus, and it comes with the scent of freshly brewed coffee. Spartan Grounds, a student-run coffee business, officially launched this semester with the goal of providing students meaningful, hands-on experience within a supportive school environment.
The business was designed to help students develop important work skills that will prepare them for future employment. Participants volunteered to join the initiative, completed an application process, and attended a mandatory training session before stepping into their new roles. Now, each Wednesday morning, the Spartan Grounds team arrives early to manage all aspects of the coffee shop, from setup and brewing to customer service and clean up.
In addition to earning service learning hours, the students involved are gaining valuable, real world experience in teamwork, communication, and responsibility. These skills will serve them well in both their academic and professional futures after OLCHS or college.
Spartan Grounds is currently operated by eight dedicated student employees and is open Wednesday mornings from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., outside Room 13. At this time, coffee is available exclusively to staff members, but there are plans to expand operations in the future.
Staff members are encouraged to stop by, enjoy a freshly-brewed beverage, and support the students who are making Spartan Grounds a success. This program is more than just a coffee shop for our hardworking faculty, it’s a learning experience, a community effort, and a step toward preparing our Spartans for life beyond the classroom.
