Before high school, I believed these four years would be the peak of my life. I imagined having countless friends and ranking at the top of my class. But, the reality of my high school experience was far more different than I expected.
Before starting high school, I lived in a small town in Guanajuato, Mexico, where I attended middle school. The transition to Oak Lawn was drastic, not just academically, but socially as well. Even before that move, I was accustomed to frequently changing schools, never staying long enough to fully settle in, perform well academically, or build lasting friendships. Although those experiences taught me adaptability and valuable life lessons, I often struggled with a sense of belonging.
When I began my first week of high school, I expected more of the same. I was indifferent toward school, unmotivated by grades, and unsure of my place. However, as I became familiar with Oak Lawn, I realized how different this environment really was. The classes, the system, the activities, and especially the people slowly changed my perspective. Meeting friends who constantly pushed themselves forward and faculty members who believed in me inspired me to do the same.
Over time, I found my determination. I transitioned from ESL and support courses into honors and AP classes, where I met people who shared my interests, values, and goals, people I now proudly call my friends. Through both academics and extracurricular activities, I gained recognition I never imagined for myself, made possible by teachers who saw my potential even before I did.
Along the way, I discovered more about who I am. I learned that I enjoyed writing, that I am strong on the tennis court, that I thrive in leadership roles, and many other aspects of not just who I am but who I wish to become as I continue forward. From starting my initiative, Bilingual Buddies, to being nominated as Student Council President, I grew in confidence and purpose while making genuine connections I’ll cherish.
I am deeply grateful for Oak Lawn, for the lessons taught inside and outside the classroom, for the teachers who guided me, and for the friendships that made this journey unforgettable. As my time here comes to an end, I look back on these four years with appreciation and pride. Because of this community, I didn’t just grow academically, I finally found a place where I belong and I hope that who ever is reading knows that they do too.
