Music is a very powerful tool that can evoke a plethora of emotions in someone. One emotion we as people don’t talk about enough is the one of nostalgia. Some songs have a way to pull you back in time and relive bittersweet memories that you don’t realize you took for granted in the moment. One song in particular that does this perfectly is “Where’d All the Time Go?” by Dr Dog. The song opens with muffled voices followed by a guitar riff and a steady beat that wraps listeners in warmth. Once the opening notes are heard, I’m taken back to summer days. Riding my bike with friends around the block, trying to get everyone to come outside, or constantly playing infected at the park until everyone was out of breath and we all needed to go home. The connection to music and memories hits hardest with the opening lyrics “ Where’d all the time go it’s starting to fly” . At the age of 17, I often lay in bed thinking about that friend group, my second family, and how important those memories are to me. Any time this song plays through my headphones all I can hear is the laughter we all shared running along the streets just being kids. It’s something I took for granted. A memory I never fully appreciated until it was gone. The feeling of nostalgia is something that never goes away. The song musically layers echoing voices like ones you’d hear in faint memories with mellow guitar riffs with steady drumbeats. “Where’d All the Time Go” is commonly used for graduations as it captures the feeling of leaving childhood behind and starting a new chapter in life. This track is so special because it connects with everyone, no matter your age, anyone who listens will get a sense of nostalgia in their own personal way remembering times we forgot to cherish.
