Oak Lawn’s very own club, Spartans Without Borders, has organized a fundraising event to collect money for a trip to Bolivia to help build a hospital.
Spartans Without Borders is a student led service group. It was established in 2004 by Christopher Repa. Since its establishment the service group has fundraised and been to Bolivia six times. The last time being in 2019, where they helped keep a hospital open for a year and funded money to help constitution, pay workers, buy supplies, pay for utilities, and make donations.
This year the service group is active again. They are planning events to raise money for a trip to Bolivia, and to donate to Bethel Hospital. To do so the group has arranged a bowling event- Bowling for Bolivia- to help reach their goal.
This is the first event they have set up. Usually the group has two to three large events to help raise enough money for their trip. In the past the group has always reached their goal.
This event will take place on Friday, October 24th from 8 pm to 11pm. Located at Suburbanite Bowl in Westmont IL. This night will include dinner, unlimited bowling, and a free raffle ticket. Tickets to attend are sold for 70 dollars.
To buy a ticket you must speak to the club sponsor, Dr. Repa, or one of the five members, Isaac Bayas, Marco Budzak, Eli Kulpinski, Emiliano Lopez, and Belal Moutaouakkil. This event is also promoted on social media.
Members of the service group are happy with this opportunity and want to help the people of Bolivia. Moutaouakkil shares, “I think this is a really valuable experience, to spend seventeen days without any advanced technology, just building a hospital and spending time with the locals. I think this will help build important life skills.”
Budzak also shares, “I want to see what life has to offer and learn new life skills that high school can’t offer.”
Kulpinski and Lopez both share that they want to help people and think that experience will be good for them and for others.
There are multiple ways to help support this group and their service plans. This includes: buying a ticket to their events, sponsoring a bowling lane, donating to the raffle prize, and donating to their go fund me page (www.gofundme.com/spartans-without-borders). Each way would help them raise money to travel to Bolivia and help keep hospitals running.
