Oak Lawn Community High school has had plenty of new changes for the development of the school and students. Many students have taken notice of this year’s school lunch, and there has been a significant difference as the school is under a new vendor.
The new vendor is known as “OrganicLife”, one of the largest food management companies in the country. They provide a wide variety of food options, that many of the students are not accustomed to as options were limited with our last vendor.
According to the assistant superintendent, Joseph McCurdy, the district chose to select a new vendor because of the previous vendor’s failure to meet many of the expectations of students and staff. This is understandable, as many students in previous years have complained about the poor quality of the school lunch and have even refused to eat it.
Joseph O’Leary and I, thoroughly enjoy the pizza . O’Leary particularly enjoys the seasoning and cheese of the pizza, saying, “It is much better than last year’s.”
Personally, I enjoy the pizza because of the soft and crunchy crust which pairs very well with the cheese and sauce.
Ethan Zumhagen and Skylar Koonce both love the nachos because of the variety of items they can choose for their toppings.
McCurdy, who has tried every single entrée on the menu, also enjoys the nachos and panini-pressed sandwiches, which must mean they’re of high quality.
It is very exciting to be able to experience a new lunch program for the first time after having the same options since freshman year. Many seniors are happy to have the privilege to try these new menu items for their last school year.
Koonce is glad that the younger students will have access to better lunch options than what she and other seniors were used to.
It’s interesting to see the school undergo so many changes in such a short period time–the field house, the Spartan lobby, and the lunch.
McCurdy believes that among all of these changes, the new lunch program will have a positive impact on our school due to OrganicLife’s commitment to providing students with a variety of entrees and fresh fruits and vegetables, prioritizing both taste and health. McCurdy is also excited about the vendor’s ability to cater for after-school events, which is just as exciting to have.
Although there are many options to choose from, students and staff are able to weigh in on conversations with the District and OrganicLife to make lunch better for everyone. McCurdy hosts quarterly meetings to discuss the lunch program with students, staff, and parents.
