Boys varsity basketball season is beginning soon, and this season is bound to go well after the success of the previous seasons for OLCHS. The Spartans are currently riding a three-year run as reigning South Suburban Conference Red champions. Now they are hunting for number four in a row.
Jason Rhodes, head coach of the boys varsity basketball team is really pumped for this year’s boys basketball season as he believes that we can beat past records. Mr. Rhodes claims, “ I think we’re gonna have a good team, as we have a great group of seniors to help lead us, and some juniors coming back with experience.”
Some players that are coming back with experience are, seniors Donte Montgomery and Ali Farhan as well as junior Jack Dempsey. Montgomery was a leading scorer last season, and he returns this year. Farhan is a returning point guard, and Dempsey was a starter as a sophomore last year and he’s a leading three-point shooter. Rhodes states that there are many more opportunities this year for boys varsity basketball.
Rhodes is hoping to be right there for the South Suburban Conference Red championship again, but there are changed players and coaches, so he doesn’t know what to except yet from conference opponents. As a coach he is very proud to continue on another season with athletes that he has had in the past years. Mr. Rhodes believes that the team is full of success.
Rhodes also claims that there are some things that varsity can work on as a team. He states, “Defense can improve, and a working progress for us is rebounding and those two things go hand and hand, but I believe we can go out and play in transition to thrive.”
Rhodes has very high expectations for his team this year, and he has had an amazing season last year and the previous years before that. He believes that as a team, if the boys improve on those skills, that they can come back and be even better than the seasons prior to this new season.
The boys varsity basketball has some really good games on their schedule this year.
Rhodes is looking forward to the new tournaments this year as he prepares for them knowing he has new competition. Mr. Rhodes is overall very excited to meet his new team knowing they can create new records as a team.
