It’s the time of year again leading up to Homecoming. The week preceding the dance has many events lined up. On Friday the twentieth, window painting, Monday the twenty-third, we have the in-school pep rally, Tuesday the twenty-fourth, the powder puff game, Wednesday the twenty-fifth, the Homecoming parade, and Friday the twenty-seventh, the Homecoming football game.
September twentieth, Oak Lawn’s clubs and sports teams set across our school to decorate the hallway windows. This afterschool activity lasted until five o’clock, while students grabbed a paint brush and some paint. Each club was competing for the best decorated window following the Homecoming Dance’s theme: Spartans at the Disco. This event was wholesome and cheerful, students’ laughs could be heard around the school, while painting with friends and teammates. The school supplied pizza for each club and team to enjoy while taking part in the painting competition. You can find the painted windows in the first and second floor breezeways and in the cafeteria. This year’s champion for the painting is the Journalism team.
This year’s pep rally started off with the band playing music while the whole school gathered in the Spartan Gym. Their loud symphonies can be heard across the school hallways, boosting excitement before the pep rally begins. To kick it off, The theater program performed a song from their play Sister Act, which included a dance number for the whole school. Our cheer team does their performance for the school in preparation for the football game, along with the Dance Team’s routine. All the fall sports are announced and members walk in front of school representing their Varsity team. The sports include Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis, Boy Cross Country, Girls Cross Country, Boys Golf, Girls Golf, Girls VolleyBall, Football, and the Fishing team.
On Tuesday the twenty-fourth our annual homecoming powderpuff game was set in motion. We began with the Fresh/Soph team against the Juniors resulting in a zero to twelve win for our Junior class. Both teams fought with dedication to supporting their class. Now into our final match with the Juniors against the Seniors. The final game was suspenseful as the ball was thrown between teammates and the opposing team chased them. When the clock hit zero our senior class was crowned the winners with a six to twelve score.
On September twenty-fifth our OLCHS club and sports teams lined up and prepared to walk down Austin Avenue to the front of Oak Lawn Community High School to showcase each activity during the Fall season. As the students were led by the Oak Lawn Fire Department, our band showcased their talent by playing music, the theater program supported their show encouraging students and parents to buy tickets, and our other teams and clubs represented themselves by throwing candy to those who watched. Finally, to end the night off our dance, cheer, and band team performed their talents followed by a firework show.
To end off our Homecoming spirit week our football team played against Einsienhower. It was a close match up between the Spartans and Cardinals. At the end of halftime Spartans had the lead twenty to nineteen. Coming back from an exciting performance from the dance team, the football teams are back with head to head competition. Eisenhower was the first to score after the short break, taking the lead. Oak Lawn’s next possession leads to a score by Oak Lawn to put them back in the lead. The teams go back and forth eventually Eisenhower is in the lead near the end of the game. Oak Lawn’s last drive was met with unbeatable defense, ultimately leading to a tough loss for the Spartans.
