Homecoming is an event all High School students in the United States of America look forward to. It’s a way for students to celebrate their school spirit and allows a little bit of fun in the process. At Oak Lawn Community High School, Spirit Week has been organized for the upcoming homecoming events.
On Wednesday, September 27, The school organized a homecoming parade. In this parade, the different clubs and after-school sports got together to march down Austin. The awards for Best Walking float went to Girl Volleyball, whose members exemplified the best school spirit. The Best vehicle float went to SCAB (Senior Class Advisory Board). The Best Use of the Theme was Girls Cross Country. Finally, The Dance team won the award for the most Spirited Group. On this day we were also presented with this year’s Grand Marshal, Mrs. Mary Kay Nochols, who will be retiring from Oak Lawn come the end of this year. She was a beloved PE teacher and will be missed by many.
Another crucial part of homecoming at OLCHS is the Homecoming Court. Students vote for their peers whom they would like to see on the court. The Juniors that were voted to be on the court were as follows, Omar Ali and Kulia Krok, Dylan Walsh and Teagan Krzystof, Jack Dillon and Danielle Dempsey. The seniors that were voted for this position were Emeen Hamad and Maeve Hassett, Connor Lewis and Maya Quinonez, Corey Lee and Rizan Ali, and last but not least, Kyla Brennan and Anna Driscoll. Finally, The King and Queen of Homecoming were Emeen Hamad and Anna Driscoll.
Leading up to the dance, on Friday, September 29, Oak Lawn challenged Evergreen Park to a football game, despite all of the school spirit and support that was exemplified, we were unable to beat them.
Finally, the event we were all waiting for, was the Homecoming dance. The theme chosen by the Student Council was “Spartans at the Masquerade” and the Spartans delivered on that theme. Hundreds of OLCHS students and not OLCHS students got together and came to the dance. The dance was a collection of good music and dancing. It’s not a surprise that everyone looks forward to this special week.
Homecoming is one of those school events that everyone looks forward to. The combination of the Pep rally and Parades, Football games, and the actual dance make it an event thats beloved by all.
