The usage of cell phones has always been a problem in school environments, whether nobody pays attention to their lesson because they’re always texting their friends, or just wanting to distract themselves. Recently, OLCHS has made stricter policies on cell phone usage in classes that range to prevent disruption and distraction in class.
Around the first day to week of school, teachers have made it known that they are stricter on phone usage. In some classes, they include using “phone pouches”, in which students must put their phones in these pouches to prevent them from using it during class. Even Dr. Lietz herself had announced during the first school google meet that phones, airpods, headphones, and any other electronic devices should be put away as soon as you enter the class, or even before you step foot inside.
Some students at OLCHS have formed opinions on what they think of these stricter enforcements. Sophomore Irene Levy states, “I think they are too strict because what if someone needs to be on their phone for an important reason. I think the rules are okay for students with no self-control but too strict for the students who do have self-control.” Another sophomore, Rory Ali, has a bit of a different approach. She says, “The cell phone policies are good because they allow for complete concentration on work, and full attention to work in class. However, putting them away in phone pouches or bags isn’t good and a saturday detention for having phones out isn’t good either.” Many students have mixed feelings about this situation in general, but overall think they are good for everyone who needs to follow the school rules.
