This year, Oak Lawn has added a new club to their roster- the Water Polo club. Run by Coach Porco, it teaches you the basics of the fast-paced sport. The club takes places on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the pool across from the Spartan Gym.
“It’s a very fun sport that has a lot of different aspects that make it unique. The more people you have, the more fun it is. If you join, you get to meet new people, have a new skill set, and have lots of fun,” head Coach Porco stated.
During practice, you will learn everything you need to know in order to play water polo. These skills include catching, throwing, and improving your swimming skills.
“It’s definitely a sport everyone can add into their daily lives. It’s something you can make into a hobby,” player Bashar Nassar said.
Anyone can join this club. You do not have to be an experienced water polo player or swimmer, just someone interested in the sport.
“I would encourage people who have never swam or played water polo before to join. You don’t have to be the best of the best to play. You just have to try and put in the effort,” player Rory Ali stated.
For those who do not know, water polo is a sport played with a ball and scoring system, much like other sports we have at Oak Lawn.
“It’s a mixture between soccer and basketball. There’s constant movement, and you need to have lots of endurance, just like for both of those sports,” Coach Porco said.
The sport is also a great way to stay in shape both mentally and physically during the school year.
“If you want to get in shape and get into the water, I would recommend water polo,” Ali stated.
