Boys Basketball Team Breaks Records
The Oak Lawn Boys Basketball Team has done it again, securing yet another conference win for the 2022/2023 season. This is the first time in history that our boys basketball team has won a conference tournament two years in a row.
In a high-stakes game on February 3rd against Reavis, the Spartans were able to pull through and get the victory they sought after.
But the team didn’t get their victory without struggle. Jason Rhodes, the coach of the team, was very ecstatic about the win. “December was tough and confidence was low,” Rhodes said.
The team lost three games in a row during that month, and the team morale was low.
On top of that, senior Xavier Sulaiman unfortunately suffered an injury in early December, and this caused a bit of uncertainty in the lineup as he was scoring an average of 20 points per game. But the team persisted and Eduardo Chiquito stepped up as his temporary replacement.
It’s a good thing that they did. As of the new year, the team was 12-4.
Senior and three-sport athlete Ayham Salah said, “a lot of work was put in, we were in the gym everyday in the summer and over the fall.” He also mentions that the team is “like a family” and has “good chemistry.” He had a great final season and is debating which sport he would like to continue in college.
In the past, the boy’s basketball team has won over 6 conferences. The Spartans have won conference championships in 1967, 1971, 1979, 1983, and now, 2022 and 2023.
Rhodes is “Very proud” of his team, especially the senior class, who have had a big impact on the team. He is sure that the Junior class of 2024 will step up and lead the team to more victories in the following seasons.
