Lady Spartans Off to Strong Start

The Oak Lawn Community High School girls basketball team has gotten off to a quick and successful start this season. However, the Spartans usually find a true measure of how good they really are in their own Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament. And as of the press deadline on Tuesday, Dec. 14, the team is proving it is for real with two victories to improve its season record to 9-2 overall.

Oak Lawn opened the tournament on Saturday with a convincing win over Aurora Central Catholic. Junior Kate Dillon led the attack with 17 points while Mia Kennelly added 14. The freshmen stepped up as well with Danielle Dempsey scoring 11 points and Jacky Canales scoring nine. Rose Savaglio directed the offense at point guard and chipped in seven points.

On Monday night the Spartans started slowly against a gritty Riverside-Brookfield team and only led by one point at halftime. However, the halftime adjustments helped to turn up the defensive intensity and they eventually cruised to a 50-33 win.

Dillon was everywhere on both ends of the floor and finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five steals. Kennelly played a complete game as well with 13 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, and six steals.
