Bowlers Blazing into The Season
Trailing rival Reavis by 73 pins after game one in early December, things didn’t look too bright for the Oak Lawn Community High School boys bowling team. However, the Spartans rallied in game two and shot an astronomical 1,283 to defeat the Rams, 2,324-2149. The huge game of 1,283 set an OLCHS single-game record and according to the Illinois High School Association website, it was the third highest single-game team total in Illinois state history.
In game two Ramiro Garcia led the way bowling a 273. He was followed by Steven Hebel with a 259 and Domas Rasymas with a 257. Logan Wendt and Sam Bergamo each bowled a 247. It was an incredible accomplishment. At one point each bowler had six to seven strikes in a row.
“It was an amazing night for the Spartans,” head coach Kevin Walery said. “Everyone was throwing strikes and having fun. It was a total team effort.”
The Spartans headed to the Oak Forest Invitational after that and placed sixth overall. The Spartans rolled a 6,046 for the day. Garcia led the way finishing in seventh place overall. Rasymas was on fire in the afternoon and finished in 17th place.
Later in the season, both the varsity and junior varsity teams beat Hillcrest. Wendt had the high game of 268 and 454 series. Garcia had a 440 series, and Hebel bowled a 228. The Spartans remained undefeated in the South Suburban Conference at 8-0 and improved to 10-1 overall.
