“Headquarters Is Under Attack!”
On Tuesday April 3rd, a woman by the name of Nasim Najafi Aghdam, began shooting outside of YouTube headquarters in San Francisco, California. The woman had appeared upset and angered with YouTube’s policy and conditions. She walked up to headquarters and began opening fire before turning the gun on herself.
“At no point did her family make any statements regarding her potential threats or possible attack on YouTube. There was also no indication of weapons in their household,” stated a police officer onsite to the incident to The Washington Post.
Moreover, the woman visited a gun range before the incident to test her weapon before approaching YouTube headquarters. Her family revealed that she complained to YouTube about restriction against most of her content, which included veganism and animal cruelty and that her anger with YouTube led to be her motive.
“I am being discriminated and restricted on YouTube. My new videos on my accounts get fewer views than my old videos. They filtered my content and age restricted many of my videos,” stated Nasim on a YouTube video.
Furthermore, after Nasim could no longer take YouTube policies, she disappeared for two days without a trace until police found her sleeping in a car near San Diego, California. Her brother had warned authorities that she was going to YouTube for a confrontation.
“We heard people running because the floor was rumbling. I thought it was an earthquake or just an ordinary drill,” tweeted employee Vadim Lavrusik to Twitter.
Additionally, many of the employees inside the establishment were unaware that the place was under a shooting until many people started to run out the doors. YouTube headquarters had very light security on the day of the incident which allowed the woman easy access to the court side of the building.
YouTube released a statement the following day,“The officers who arrived on scene were exceptional. They entered the building to protect the lives of our employees and acted upon heroism. Thanks to the security protection in place, she wasn’t able to enter the buildings itself. We will revisit this incident and make sure to lace more security into place.”
In conclusion, YouTube is now adjusting headquarters and placing more security to ensure the safest environment for their employees. Also, the family of Nasim apologizes for the actions of their daughter and anyone who was wounded during the shooting.
