On Sunday, hours before the Grammys, the tragic reports of Kobe Bryant’s death broke out. Kobe died in a helicopter crash with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and several other passengers. The grief was felt by everyone across Twitter as everyone, non-sports fans and sports fans alike, came together to mourn the inspiration that was Kobe Bryant’s death. One user writing “I remember when we used to shout, “Kobe” in elementary school when we were throwing rolled up paper in the trash bin. He was our hero, he was invincible to us. He wasn’t supposed to go out like this. My heart hurts.” Twitter also was mad at TMZ and several other sources who were the first to leak the accident, before his family was able to be informed about it. Artist Chief Keef released a sentimental song to memorialize him. A tribute for him went viral after ESPN’s Elle Duncan assured everyone that Kobe died doing what he loved the most, being a girl dad. Duncan tells the story of where in response to the question “What would you do if your fourth child was another girl”, Kobe responded to Duncan with “I would have 5 more girls if I could. I’m a girl-dad”. Everybody is still mourning the sad loss of Kobe and the legacy he left behind. #MambaForever

 

  • Grammys

 

Following allegations of racial and sexual misconduct along with dishonest business biases hindering the nomination process, the Grammys took place this Sunday. Following the somber news of Kobe Bryant’s death, multiple tributes took place throughout the night. Billie Eilish swooped all the nominations, winning all of the Big Four categories which are Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist of the Year. While others, such as Ariana Grande(who had the biggest snub of the night, losing all 5 nominations) lost all their noms. The most popular performances of the night were Billie Eilish, Camila Cabello, Lizzo, Demi Lovato, and Lil Nas X.

 

  • Impeachment Trials

 

The Impeachment Trial has finally started in the Senate. This trial will determine whether or not President Donald Trump is removed from office or not. To do so, the Senate would need a 2/3s majority. However, it is very unlikely for that to happen as both Republicans and Democrats don’t seem to want to change their minds on the matter. Also, Republicans control the Senate right now with a majority of 52. 

 

  • Coronavirus

 

Twitter users are anxious as more and more stories develop of the viral outbreak of coronavirus. The disease has mostly been prominent in China. As of now, there are a reported 6000 cases in China and a climbing death toll of 132. In the U.S. 5 cases have been reported. 2 in California, 1 in Arizona, 1 in Washington, and then 1 in Illinois. Right here in Chicago. The virus is essentially an infection in your nose, sinuses, upper throat, and chest. It is deadly, and like most diseases, comes from animals. But according to the New York Times, scientists are racing to find a vaccine to the fatal virus. The World Health Organization has assessed the global risk from moderate to high. However, this was concealed from the public in a footnote. The reason being not to stir up panic and unrest. 

 

  • Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s comeback single has been leaked! The song is supposedly titled “Stupid Love”. Fans, of course, rushed to download the link, as they have been desperate for solo music from the singer since her last album Joanne dropped in 2016. Gaga reacted hilariously to the leak though. She tweets “can y’all stop” along with a stock image of someone in a ski mask listening to music illegally.
