The results of this year’s midterm elections.

Earlier within the month of November, polls had reached in upon this year’s midterm elections, and on the fifth of this month, it had been made official that the Democrats would be in control of the House of Representatives. Not only was this midterm one of the most expensive, but this had been the biggest midterm voter turnout since 1914; over thirty-six million Americans had voted early.

Upon this remarkable piece of information, America is now introduced to its most diverse House. With more female Representatives than the country has ever seen before, there are members of the LGBTQ community, the first ever Native American women in the House, and even more racial and cultural ranges making up Congress. Many states see this as an important facet to the country, especially during these times, seeming as though the diversity of the House is a direct reflection of the diversity of the US as well.

Sharice Davids in the third congressional district of Kansas is the first ever openly gay Native American woman to represent the state, as well as former attorney Deb Haaland in Arizona. Both women have brought awareness to the crimes and injustices brought upon the  Native American and LGBTQ communities. Most prominently known in New York’s fourteenth congressional district is the twenty-nine year old Puerto Rican Political activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Her outspokenness and driven nature has attracted the youth, especially, in New York, allowing her to gain the votes.

Moreover, now that the Democrats are in charge of the House, they have political oversight― meaning they have checks and balances over the president. A common goal that many of the Democrats have been discussing since the president’s election is the need to further investigations on the president himself. A retaliation from the Republicans, in support of Trump, expressed on their side that the investigations would prove to be unnecessary. The division within Congress over this controversial issue is mirroring the people, as both left and right political parties debate amongst this dilemma.

While there is awry amongst certain matters, this year’s midterm elections proved the tenacity of the Americans through their willingness to vote. The diversity within the nation has shown through the results of a Democratic House, and though it is still early on to tell where the country is headed, it’s evident that silent Democrats will not be biting their tongues any longer.
